Department Seeks Student Input – As part of its regular faculty review process, the Journalism Department invites students to provide feedback about the teaching effectiveness of professors who are being considered for reappointment. This year, the four faculty members being considered are Prof. Lori Baker-Schena, Prof. Marcy De Veaux, Prof. Taehyun Kim and Prof. Jessica Retis-Rivas. If you would like to confidentially discuss the performance of any of the professors listed above, you are invited to meet with the Department Personnel Committee on Thursday, November 4, 2010. Appointments begin at Noon to 2 p.m. and should be made in advance with Heather Powell or Susie Torres in the Department office, MZ 210. Signed written comments are welcome and must be given to Heather or Susie by noon on Thursday, November 4, 2010.
Editor Positions - The Daily Sundial is now accepting applications for editors for the Spring 2011 semester. Positions available include:
News Editor: Responsible for developing and tracking story ideas, primary assignment editor, gives content a first read and edits stories with reporters. Works with photo editor, art director and online editor to coordinate content for print and online. Manages and posts content on website.
Asst. News Editor: Assists News Editor with editing content and assigning stories. Manages and posts content on website. Responsible for coming up with feature story ideas. Responsible for getting breaking news content online, assigning work to reporters while on their shifts.
Online Editor: Responsible for working with key editors and staff to generate unique content and update the website. Works with staff on multimedia projects, coordinates with other sections/editors, produces original work. Oversees the work of the Social Media Coordinator and Multimedia Editor.
Multimedia Editor: Responsible for working with staff on producing multimedia projects, assists online editor in coordinating with other sections/editors, produces original work. Assists with training staff.
Social Media & Blog Coordinator: Responsible for monitoring the Daily Sundial Facebook page and Twitter. Must post and tweet stories. Work with editors on story ideas and finding sources. Responsible for working with reporters on blog ideas and editing blog posts.
Life & Style Editor: Responsible for developing and tracking story ideas associated with student life. Gives content a first read and edits stories with reporters. Works with photo editor, art director and online editor to coordinate content for print and online. Designs daily pages. Manages and posts content on website.
Photo Editor: Directs all staff and contributing photographers; works with all other editors on daily photos and other visual content. Preps photos for print and online editions. Manages and posts content on website.
Assistant Photo Editor: Assists photo editor in coordinating and fulfilling assignments. Preps photos for online and print. Manages and posts content on website.
Sports Editor: Daily coverage of campus and other sports issues, games and features. Oversees the sports blog and other social media outlets. Responsible for design of daily pages. Manages and posts content on website.
Assistant Sports Editor: Helps the Sports Editor with coverage of campus and other sports issues, games and features. Assists with design of daily pages and posting of stories to website.
Opinion Editor: Coordinates, edits and writes staff editorials, other commentaries, online polls, letters to the editor and editorial cartoons. Designs daily page.
Arts & Entertainment Editor: Coordinates and edits stories, reviews, listings and other information about movies, music, theater and the arts. Manages and posts content on website. Designs print pages.
Copy Editors: Responsible for editing text and proofing pages.
Applicants must be in good academic and disciplinary standing at the time of application and during the term in office. Student must have completed 60 units of college work and have completed 12 units of college journalism at the time of application and must have completed at least one semester on a journalism department practicum. Students must be enrolled in the Sundial practicum, 397B/A during the term of the editorship, must have completed Journalism 330 with a C or better. Editors must attend weekly staff meetings at 10 a.m. on Mondays and Thursdays. Most editors receive modest stipends, which are paid in five installments during the semester.
