Sports- College students interested in sports journalism can get specialized training, a paid sports news internship, a scholarship and industry contacts through the 2013 Sports Journalism Institute. The program combines an intensive week of instruction from top professionals with an eight-week paid internship at a print, digital or electronic media outlet. Class session topics include ethics, photo editing, how to keep a running score at a baseball game, and copy editing. Upon completion of the program, college students receive a $500 scholarship. The 2013 program starts with the training sessions taught by Poynter Institute faculty May 31 to June 8 at the University of Missouri at Columbia, followed by the internships. College sophomores and juniors with editing and online skills are encouraged to apply. Applicants do not need to be AAJA members, but must sign up as members if selected. Travel logistics, housing arrangements and internship placements are made by the institute. Applications must be submitted to AAJA by November 2, 2012, and they can be found at http://www.aaja.org/2013-aajasports-journalism-institute-internship/.
