Alliance For Women In Media Southern California 
2016 Scholarship

Deadline: Feb. 14, 2016

AWM SoCAL and the AWM So Cal Foundation have established a scholarship fund to aid in the higher education of promising students. This complements the AWM mission: to advance the impact of women and men in the electronic media and allied fields by educating, advocating and acting as a resource to its members and the industry.

Applicant Requirements:
  • Southern California resident (male or female). (Ventura, Orange, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Riverside counties).
  • Attending a Southern California accredited four-year college as a junior, senior, or graduate student. 
  • Enrolled in media courses or related curriculum.
  • Enrolled in at least 6 semester units for Spring 2016.
  • Application signed by university section/sequence head certifying applicant meets the eligibility criteria.
  • Previous AWM SoCal scholarship winners are eligible.

Scholarships:
  • $8,000 in honor of the late Earl "Squire" Behrens
  • $6,000 in honor of the late Jean Stephens 
  • $4,000 in honor of the late Doug Willis (Associated Press)
  • $4,000 in honor of Bob Schmidt (Knight-Ridder)
  • $4,000 in honor of Sacramento Bee columnist Dan Walters 
  • $4,000 in honor of the late Jerry Gillam (LA Times)
  • $4,000 in honor of the late Nereida Skelton (usually given to a community college transfer student)
Eligibility:
  • Students entering junior/senior/graduate year in Fall 2016
  • Students enrolled in journalism or aligned major
  • Students with a connection to Sacramento or a demonstrated passion for covering Sacramento region news (including state politics)
Process: 
  • ONLINE APPLICATION: Submit work product samples, a letter of interest and most recent transcript
  • Deadline to apply is March 31
  • Those who advance to the second round will be interviewed in person or by phone
  • Winners selected in late April and scholarship checks awarded at a special lunch in May

Tutoring labs are open Sunday- Thursday, and offer both daytime and evening tutoring. Tutors are classified as Instructional Student Assistants and start at $12.00/hr.

Summer Teaching Positions Available: Teach Reading to Students of All Ages This Summer

  • Earn more than $6,000 during the Summer.
  • Teachers Typically earn between $500 and $800 per week while teaching.
