Audience Engagement Intern

Location: Downtown Los Angeles
Pay Rate: $12/hour
Hours: 10-15 hours/week; M-F (Flexible)

This position is for the spring 2018 semester with an opportunity to extend into the summer.

Position Description:
Fostering Media Connections (FMC) is a 501 c (3) nonprofit organization that harnesses
 the power of journalism and media to improve the lives of vulnerable children, youth and their families. We publish two publications: The Chronicle of Social Change and Fostering Families Today. The Chronicle of SocialChange is an online news publication that covers child welfare, juvenile justice, mental health and more. Fostering Families Today is a print magazine that serves as a resource for foster parents.

This position is open to students of journalism, communications or public relations.
 The focus of this internship is on distributing news stories and engaging audiences via digital platforms. We are looking for someone who understands the basics of journalism and can use social media and email marketing to bring FMC’s news stories to a wider audience and reach key stakeholders.The internship also involves identifying journalists and editors who might cover these issues and connecting with them to share information and pitch stories for publishing partnerships.

The Audience Engagement Intern will work directly with our Distribution and Engagement Manager.

Intern duties may include but are not limited to:

• Posting FMC’s news stories with effective copy on social media platforms
• Writing and designing e-newsletters using Mailchimp
• Promoting FMC’s projects and products using social media
• Tracking analytics on FMC’s social media platforms
• Recommending strategies to maximize reader engagement
• Developing and updating lists of journalists, elected officials and advocates for story distribution
efforts

Qualifications:
• Journalism, Communications or Marketing undergraduate/graduate student
• Experience with social media and email marketing
• Journalism writing experience strongly preferred
• Excellent writing, editing, and organizational skills
• Attention to detail
• Self-starter who can take direction and contribute ideas
• Ability to work independently on projects and meet deadlines
• Knowledge of standard workplace technology
• Commitment and punctuality

NPR Next Generation Radio Annenberg School at USC  Students at Cal State schools in greater Los Angeles and the University of Southern California, this one's for you. NPR’s Next Generation Radio is now accepting applications for our non-narrated audio and digital media storytelling project at the Annenberg School at USC March 13-17. Students get to spend a week with their own professional mentor, working on NPR style audio stories, video, social media and web content. There is no cost to apply or be admitted into the program.
