The Asian Studies Program at CSUN invites the community to a talk by USC’s David Kang (International Relations, Business, and East Asian Languages and Cultures) on recent North Korea-USA-South Korea diplomacy, the importance of the US-ROK alliance to regional security, and portrayals of Kim Jong Un and North Korea in US news media.
Dr. Kang’s talk will put recent North Korea-USA-South Korea diplomacy in a broader context, arguing that while President Trump’s initiative may be recent, the questions of whether and how to engage or contain North Korea have been an enduring debate. Understanding the motivations of North Korea’s behavior is a key element of making progress in the region, but just as important is understanding the US-ROK alliance and its importance to regional security. Dr. Kang will also discuss how the U.S. news media’s portrayals of Kim Jong Un and North Korea shape public opinion toward North Korea.
