Student Assistant for University Communications

Department: Marketing and Communications, University Advancement


Description: Position available for student in writing disciplines with interest and
experience in social media creation, news writing, magazine writing and press
release development. Position calls for assisting the University Communications
staff in content development and copy editing. Applicant must be enrolled full-time
as a CSUN student.

Duties:

  • Cover on-campus events in multiple formats, including social media and
  • writing post-event story
  • Develop articles to be posted and/or featured on CSUN Today that announce, reflect or highlight campus events and accomplishments, faculty and staff news and student accomplishments
  •  Develop feature stories on subject matter pertaining to students, faculty and alumni for inclusion on CSUN Today
  • Contribute content ideas for potential CSUN Today stories, press releases and CSUN Magazine features/featurettes
  • Copy edit materials to be posted to all university forums
  • Support social media for University Advancement, including creating original content for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat
  • Develop marketing-directed content as directed
  • Various administrative duties
  • Skills required and developed:
  • Strong writing skills in multiple areas, including news, social media, press release and creative writing
  • Strong editing skills, including knowledge of AP style and proper grammar
  • Strong communication skills, including comfort in conducting interviews
  • Fluency in social media programs, including, but not limited to, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat
  • Strong research skills with media, including familiarity with the CSUN website
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office – must be fluent with Microsoft Word (Mac edition)
  •  Basic familiarity with Adobe programs, including Photoshop and InDesign

Education/Experience:



  •   Student working on their Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in social media, marketing, public relations, journalism, communications or a related field of study.
Skills/Knowledge/Ability:


  • Knowledge of social media platforms including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube
  •  Enthusiastic self-starter who loves to write
  • Understanding of writing and generating content for different target audiences
  • Good communication, decision-making, and relationship-building skills
  • Team player willing to absorb, enhance, and execute brand direction
  • Support and update social media accounts
  • Help create, post, and publicize content
  • Innovative thinker, has ideas, likes to develop new ones
  • Photoshop skills a plus but not required
  • Familiarity with social media analytics platforms a plus but not required

Job description:
CCC is looking for a content creator savvy in video, audio, photography or graphic design to tell the stories of Americans trying to make ends meet. Their ideal candidate is an experienced multi-platform storyteller with a deep commitment to social justice rooted in building the power and leadership of low-income people. They are looking for someone visually creative to deliver compelling – and shareable – content that shows the power of social movements to help families thrive.
Principal responsibilities:
  • Create multiplatform stories in video, audio, photography or graphic design content, for publication in media sites or sharing on CCC, CCCA or partner social channels.
  • Work with key CCC teams and stakeholders to tell the story of CCC’s work and its impact
    • Create content, including video and graphics, for CCC/CCCA brand marketing.
    • Create content that builds strategic links between campaigns and marketing communications plans.
  • Manage a virtual team of Communications Fellows made up of writers, photographers, videographers, social media managers and other content creators who tell the successes and challenges of low-income families.
  • Coach, mentor and advise staff and grassroots partners on essential elements of visual storytelling on multiple platforms.
  • Develop and deploy rapid-response content in collaboration with other Communications or Campaigns staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated expertise in creating content – video and audio production, graphic design or other digital content – focused on progressive change and social advocacy.
  • Demonstrated experience in coaching, mentoring and teaching effective tools for visual storytelling.
  • Exemplary writing and editing skills.
  • Top-notch communications, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • A creative ability to frame ideas, develop stories and synthesize complex public policy issues in a way that appeals to a wide variety of audiences.
  • A high degree of comfort managing multiple tasks and short and long term deadlines, and working in an unpredictable, fluid and fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding in the use of visual media to create engagement and spur action.
  • Demonstrated experience with modern web design, photography and video editing programs (Adobe Suite: Premier, Photoshop, Illustrator).
  • Experience in Motion Graphics Design and Animation experience a plus.
  • Experience producing audio content or podcasts a plus.
This position reports to:  Director of Content Strategy and Development
This position is in the staff bargaining union represented by Local 70 of the IFPTE and is governed by a collective bargaining agreement between CCC management and the union.
Salary and Benefits: $68,000 – $78,000 annual salary.  CCC offers a competitive salary based on qualifications and an excellent benefits package, which includes 4 weeks of vacation; paid leave between December 24 and January 1; 3% employer contribution to a 401k at time of hire and an additional 5% at six months of employment (8% employer contribution); and a choice of health insurance plans.
